Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, they say. Never skip breakfast, they say. Sure, we know it’s important – vital even – in order to get through a day of constant action, whether it’s heading out at first light for a surfing session, tapping away at a keyboard, a five mile bike ride, or prepping for that major exam – breakfast is the fuel for this.
Less frequently mentioned is the essence of protein in that very breakfast. As most of us know, protein is important, but why is it important?
As your body is sleeping, it’s using those hours of inactivity to do some good old maintenance work, and your fuel stores need to be replenished as soon as you wake up. This is where protein comes into play and the 3 main reasons why it should be part of your breakfast:

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Your body is already lucky enough to possess 11 amino acids, but there are 9 remaining ones that are essential for your body to build the protein it needs, and these have to be retained through diet. Foods that contain these 9 essential amino acids are referred to as complete proteins, and these can be obtained from animal as well as plant based foods. For your brain to function at all, not to mention at its prime, it requires the amino acids that these foods contain. However, Amino acids are best known for their role in building muscle and strength, especially pre and post workout. This is worth bearing in mind if you’re an early riser and like to get in your training sessions first thing – then protein nourishment at the start of the day is a must.
